The Menopause-Proof Body

In my thirties, I had a rather arrogant belief: menopause was optional. I know how that sounds. But underneath the arrogance was something more sincere — a conviction that if women were designed to go through this transition, it was never meant to be a catastrophe.

There's a principle in Chinese medicine I've carried with me for over twenty years of study and work: for every ailment, nature has provided a cure. Not always an easy one, maybe not known yet, and not always an obvious one — but it's there. So as I've entered menopause myself, that's exactly what I've done. I've scoured the scientific research literature. I've experimented on my own body. And what I've found is genuinely good news: the things that move the needle most are daily habits.

Three Things I Wasn't Willing to Lose: Strength, Brain, Sleep

When I think about getting older, three things matter to me more than almost anything else: strength — in my body and in my bones — sleep, and my memory and focus. Not coincidentally, these are also the three areas menopause hits the hardest. Falling estrogen doesn't just bring hot flashes; it erodes muscle and bone density, disrupts the hormonal choreography that gives us deep, restorative sleep, and clouds the mental clarity so many of us took for granted in our thirties and forties.

So those became my targets. And here's what I've learned about hitting them.

Strength and bone density. Exercise is non-negotiable, but it's not about punishing workouts — it's about finding the right-sized exercise for your body and your life. The stimulus for building bone density isn't only the pull of muscle on bone through contraction; it's also the simple weight of your muscle mass bearing down on your skeleton. Build muscle, and you're building bone almost as a byproduct. On the nutrition side, we eat to build muscle; but two other things matter most: keeping sugar low, and making sure I have plenty of the nutrients on board that let my body actually build denser bone and put calcium to use — because calcium alone, without the right cofactors, doesn't get you very far.

Sleep. This is where exercise pulls double duty for me — the same strength work that protects my muscles and bones also dramatically improves the quality of my sleep. The other lever I pull daily is carbohydrates, used intentionally. Timed well, carbohydrates help trigger the hormonal cascade that ushers in sleep, and they also play an important role in how my body stores and uses fat.

Memory and focus. This one starts at breakfast. What I eat first thing sets the chemical environment in my brain for the day — giving my neurotransmitters what they need to create real, sustained focus rather than the jittery kind. And what I eat later in the day matters just as much, because it's preparing my brain to wind down for sleep. The other half of the focus equation is inflammation. I lower it daily with food, tea — a powerful antioxidant — and especially with matcha, which has been remarkably effective for supporting brain health, along with my Immunity Elixir — introduced in the Glow Up.

I also lean on a few key supplements, and one has become a genuine favorite: nattokinase. Here's why it matters so much during menopause — as estrogen declines, our risk for cardiovascular disease rises, and cardiovascular health is directly tied to brain health, because it governs the free flow of blood into the brain. Nattokinase helps open those passageways. It supports heart health and cholesterol levels, yes, but it also improves circulation within the brain itself — which is a big part of why memory glitches, low stamina, and that foggy lack of focus so many of us associate with menopause can actually be addressed.

No One-Size-Fits-All

If there's one thing more than twenty years of study and practice has taught me, it's this: there are principles, but there is no one-size-fits-all. What creates a menopause-proof body for me might not be exactly what does it for you. So this September, when we bring these habits into Strong and Lean, we won't just be handing you a protocol to follow blindly. I'll be teaching you the underlying principles behind strength, sleep, and mental clarity — and then working with you to personalize them into something that actually fits your life, your body, and your preferences. That's how a habit becomes sustainable instead of one more thing you white-knuckle through for a few weeks and abandon.

Building It Together

This fall also brings something new: with part of Jolie becoming the Jolie Living Room, we'll have a dedicated space for in-person conversations — a place to dig into how to alleviate the challenges of menopause, ask questions, and hear more of my own story, in person and in community with each other.

Whether you're bracing for menopause, in the thick of it, or working to repair what it's already changed, Strong and Lean this September is built for you. It was transformational last fall. This fall, with everything we've refined, it's going to be even more so.

I'd love for you to join me.
